Spring Park Events are Blooming at NeighborSpace!

DNR Forester Francis Smith speaks to a group of friends and neighbors at Levickas Woods

We here at NeighborSpace have been hard at work bringing the spring spirit to our parks! March is the beginning of event season, dodging rain and getting outside to prepare our parks for plant growth primetime. On March 4th, over 20 friends and neighbors joined us at Levickas Woods in Catonsville for a forest walk with DNR Forester Francis Smith. After learning about the keystone tree species and health of the forest, NeighborSpace’s Phyllis Joris gave an ivy removal demonstration. Volunteers scattered and removed choking ivy from over 30 trees!

March volunteering is a risky business! On March 11th, a few intrepid volunteers braved wintry cold and wind to remove invasives in overgrown Adelaide Bentley Park in Towson. With such an early start, plus several more events planned for this year’s growing season, we are hopeful that 2023 will be the year we get the invasives under control and make Adelaide Bentley Park the beautiful park for rest, play, and enjoyment we always knew it could be!

Though rain washed out our final two events of March, a clean-up event in Ridgely Manor Park and a scavenger hunt at Levickas Woods, we plan to reschedule them – and we have plenty more to come! There will be stewardship, educational or social events weekly throughout the next few months, as we emerge from winter’s darkness and into the light and warmth of spring!
